Next Monday 3rd May: Do You DIY? @ The Old Queen’s Head

London’s finest record labels, promoters and blogs/music websites will be gathering for a super special bank holiday celebration at The Old Queen’s Head in Islington next Monday, and I shall be there – representing both The Blue Walrus and my label Dustbowl Records.
There will be music from a range of lovely bands and artists, including Adelaide’s Cape, and the Dustbowl Records stall will have homemade cupcakes and cookies. Now come on, if you’re London-based, what on earth could be better than trotting down to this event, picking up one of …

Bands to watch – Harrys Gym

There must be something in those frozen fjords as we see some more Scandinavian dreamers cross our paths with Norway’s Harrys Gym (MySpace). They may not be new to some from that part of the world (apparently they used to be in a hippy/blues band called Dharma years ago), but this time they should be making their mark over here with their self-titled debut dropping on 17th May.
You could describe them as almost electric/indie shoe gaze, but the vocals of Anne-Lise Frokedal offer a broken, haunting depth that others can …

A chaotic interview with… James

James’ Mirrorball Tour kicked off in Edinburgh last week and The Blue Walrus sent off one of our new roaming reporters off to meet the band and talk about their new mini album, The Night Before, and have a small glimpse in to their incredible career. Here’s what Ben had to say…

The Shimmer – Crash

The Shimmer have made a big splash over the past couple of months with more and more people loving their driving electro pop, and they have not been sitting on their hands whilst getting all this praise. They’ve been writing new material for their upcoming first live show and debut single on the increasingly influential Hit Club shortly.
And yes we have another mp3 to share, this one a little heavier electro-pop, but still just as fucking fantastic. I for one cannot wait until they show us their abilities on a …

Bands to watch – Django Django

Django Django may have missed out on getting the SXSW love they much deserve after US immigration refused them visas, but that isn’t going to stop me covering them here. I first noticed them when Illegal Tender picked them up in early 2009 and I really should have written about them then but I think their latest single WOR is their best yet and they deserve a proper mention.
They might be based out of Dalston now but they are quite the British/Irish collective hailing in parts from Edinburgh, Fife, Derry …
