When I hear something for the first time and am not too sure about it, but then on more listens it becomes added to every playlist I have on the go it annoys me slightly that I am then a good bit late on the case. So is the case with the Swanton Bombs (MySpace) right here.
The good folk at Young & Lost sent over their new single Doom (video below) I should have known better (pre-order it on 7″ from Y&L). They are pretty much on the money normally …

Cancel the Astronauts (MySpace)  have put together five tracks of glorious and unashamed indie pop, adding to the resurgence of Edinburgh’s music scene.  From when the tom-tom-led drums fall into the opening and title track “I am the President of your Fanclub (and last night I followed you home” and are joined by some Strokes-esque tight guitars you know you’re in for indie-danceable delight.

Quite a surprise all round on the winner on the Mercury Music Prize with Speech Debelle, who many considered to be the token urban act, came through and picked up the prize. Whilst her album doesn’t always hot the right notes with me I do appreciate what she’s doing surrounding herself with great musicians and bringing hip hop away from the pure production studio environment that has defined it for much of recent history. You have to hand it to the French for putting Sebastien Tellier on Eurovision and throwing a decent tune at the competition back in 2008. He may not have won but anything that will get his music in front of more people can only be good news.
