Crystal Fighters - Champion Sound
I’ve been a big supporter of Crystal Fighters (facebook/twitter) ever since my ears first pricked up from their Basque-infused electro sounds back when I was partying north of the border a couple of years back. Their album Star Of Love was a massive success and showed off a little of their softer side that complimented the bangers.

Champion Sound was always a favourite of mine from the album, as it manages to walk that tightrope of keeping that beautifully danceable beat beneath some summery, maybe even lazy vocals. Always a song to remind you of days crawling back to your villa in Ibiza, just to simmer away the morning sun next to the pool.

…and now we’re getting the song released as a single with remix duties from Mr Nô, Mustang, AKS, Homework, and Clubfeet – all twisting it to their own groove.

Mr Nô has made it a thumping techno banger – starting the remix package off in style. AKS then drops the bass wobble for a swerve towards a dubstep angle. Clubfeet get the most from the track though in my book – they’ve upped the glitz and glamour and taken it from the poolside to the sunset beach party.

The single drops on Different Recordings on 24th October.

Xaver von Treyer - Device Of The Devil

Those times when you first hear a track and you are swept up within it, hypnotised by the beat and energy – a tribal hysteria. Well that. Fucking wow.

Xaver Von Treyer (twitter/facebook) is the head honcho of Supersoul Recordings and has an album coming out in the form of The Torino Scale which is more than a little bit special (more on that later), but this track isn’t a fit for the vibe of that thing. It’s too frantic, too bursting with disco electricity – but that means that he’s dropping it as a super limited (111 pressings) one-sided personalised 12″.

The vocal line comes from a recording Xaver made with Betty La Gachette of a late 70s speech made by a baptist preacher who had been to Studio 54 and found it so appaling and revolting he claimed “disco dancing is the device of the devil”, with Xaver dexribing it as “a massive rant on how disco corrupts the soul and that ‘brother and sister’ don’t dance in such ways with each other”. Set that against screaming synths and frenetic beats and I’m pretty delirious.

There’s a whole backstory to this one.
