The Lost Mixtape vol.2

Here we go, a mixtape of some of my favourite artists and songs of 2010 so far. Posting has been rather sporadic on here as per usual, but I think we have more than made up for that with this (and the other two that are in the works). We’ve got summery indie pop all the way through to some thundering and swaggering rock and roll – but I can’t try and take all the credit for finding these – at least a couple were spotted by the fine folks over at The 405 – so hat tip to them, and thanks to Lee Jordan for the photo.

Art Museums kick off this mixtape with some wonderfully rough around the edges piece of indie pop. Strummed guitars, a foot tapping beat and all beautifully under produced on a Tascam 388 tape machine.

Lil Daggers continue in that vein of home recordings, but they ste up the tempo, and throw in some organ that wouldn’t have sounded out of place on an old Doors record. Short,sweet, fuzzy rock and roll.

We’ve featured ABC Club on here before, but we’ve got more from them here in Tinkering teacups. Sweeting, and soft guitar over rolling drums and understated vocals.

Long time favourites of mine Good Shoes are back with a new record to promote, so here we’ve got the B-side of single The Way My Heart Beats. Tight guitar, thumping drums and a chorus that will stay with your for days. This is part of a free dowload package along with more songs and videos avilable for joining their mailing list.

Swedish duo The Sweet Serenades wrap you in in soft vocals and catchy guitar and synthline whilst the drums thunder at you through the clouds.

All The Damn Kids clatter straight in with a summer-synth drenched indie-pop, before falling away to harmonies and rebuilding that will lift anyone into the sunshine.

The Fine Arts Showcase continues the perfect summer indie pop theme, with a simple piano-chord led delight that should get anyone moving. They have a habit of writing songs that define my summer.

Du Paque thunder in a bass and drum heavy offering, with Matilda Månsdotter’s desperate vocals pouring the emotion into the track.

Kick Up The Fire stomp along with melodic post-hardcore anthem, with shouted harmonies, tight guitars and double time drums. If they carry on lik ethis they may well eclipse The Cooper Temple Clause from whose song they take their name.

Temder Trap have taken a new direction with the addition of Elizabeth Morris and Katrina Dixon, as this is a tour de force of swaggering, fuzzy indie pop, that sails through its two and a half minutes at a pace.

Chapter24 takes that swagger a step further with Hepcats, that stomps its way through this eminently danceable piece of indie rock, with an added element of vocal freak out screeching that has helped them become one of the most exciting live acts around.

Summer days through the folkish haze vol.3

The days have got longer, and the sun is starting to glisten through the trees making this perfect timing for the latest instalment of Summer days through the folkish haze (previously vols 1 and 2). As with all our mixtapes here on TBW, there are some bands you may know and others you wish you did – and all perfectly accompanied by a jug of Pimms…

Big shout outs to the wonderful folk at Young & Lost, Song, by Toad, and For Folks Sake for pushing a few of these in my direction.

The Damn Choir are a four-piece from Chicago and who describe themselves as “sad-bastard music”, but don’t let that put you off as they write some of the most beautiful and soothing to soul music I have heard.

Daniel Zott will not be a new find for some, but I only got wind of him earlier this year and I was won over pretty quickly with the simple and beautiful songs he writes. The heartache slips through the background traffic and dissolves your heart.

Alessi’s Ark have been on my radar ever since Lauren introduced her to me a little while ago, and I’m in love. It’s easy and yet provocative, soothing and yet filled with richness. A blissful serenade.

My First Tooth make use of expansive orchestral builds to strike that emotional chord as you can fully immerse yourself in their musical masterpiece.

Trips and Falls are another fantastic find in the Song, by Toad stables. “…Corduroy Pants” combines soothing string movements with an off-kilter vocal style that almost reminds me of why I loved FrYars. A narrated a musically immersive dream sequence.

Planet Earth should be on every summer playlist with their sweet lullabies. “Goodbye Song” ticks along with an electronic back beat, but you will struggle not to fall for the love-gazed strumming and mumbling.

Twin Sister‘s Nectarine starts slowly with some easy guitar and dreamed vocals before the drums trip into the song and the song jumps along like a dance down your home street.

Beans on Toast has been on the backburner for me for a good while, and his styles vary quite a bit but the chirpy strum along of “Can’t Buy Me Love” just fits so well in here, especially with how provocative he’s decided to be writing a song to “piss everybody off”.

Peggy Sue have long been favourites around these parts, and with Kimya Dawson featured on the first of this series of mixtapes a couple of years, this cover of Hadlock Padlock is just too perfect to pass over even if I did post it a few weeks ago. The beautifully cute duet vocals on this gives this a very special twist on a already fantastic original.

Admiral Fallow are a new find for me, but Squealing Pigs is one of my favourite folk tracks of the last year already. It takes from both the aching heart folk traditions along with a pounding rhythm to drill it into your mind. Scotland is fast regaining their music scene and Admiral Fallow should find themselves at the top of that pile.

Johnny Flynn was on our first mixtape, but he continues to release fantastic folk-pop records so deserves to be featured again. Kentucky Pill has more of a pop sound that much on here but is a perfect summer tune. Sitting in the sun, smiling and this blaring at a volume is what we all want to do.

I Said Yes have twisted some fantastic harmonies and a whole mass of energy into a sunkissed wonder that should be played from every rooftop. FFS picked them for their first Allotment night, they have band members from everywhere I have lived over the past five years, what’s not to love?

Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros have what will be the song of the summer for a number of people right here. The RAC mix clicks it along, upping the tempo a little, the the central sections of blissed out homecomings have been kept and should put a smile on everyone’s face. It maybe everywhere already, but it deserves to be so.

Communion

What is there to say about Communion? It started off in 2006 as a club night and community at the Notting Hill Arts Club, founded by Ben Lovett (Mumford and Sons), Kevin Jones (Cherbourg) and producer Ian Grimble. But my what an impression it has left as it has provided a platform for the newest bands on London’s circuit. The night has seen the likes of Noah and the Whale, Laura Marling, Mumford and Sons, JJ Pistolet and Peggy Sue grace the stage and has become closely associated with the recent resurgence of folk in the capital.

They have since taken this fantastic live event around the UK, which is well worth catching if you can, but now have also curated a compilation album of some highlights of this folk scene they have helped nurture. We’ve been featuring a handful of these bands here on TBW over the past couple of years from Johnny Flynn to Jay Jay Pistolet, but Communion have created a community and this is the recorded product of that. And it’s amazing.

Clap to the Electricity Vol.12 with Frenchhorn Rebellion, Barretso, Vitalic and SebastiAn

It’s been a very long time coming, but definitely worth it with 12 just perfect pieces of electro and house tunes ready to get all of you back on the dance floor now the effects of new year have worn off.

As usual it is a mix of some artists you’ll know (hopefully) and others you might not, but each one of them is all kinds of awesome. The length of time this has been sitting half done on my laptop has been ridiculous, but then something better came along and it needed adding, but hey patience is a virtue.

Two Door Cinema Club are going to be huge in 2010, and this remix enhances the electro side with synths and an almost disco bassline for great effect.

Barretso is a recent find for me (hat tip to Trashbag Kids) but with his perfect disco/electro pop I can see him being a taple her on TBW.

See the Sea (Red) is the first track of Vitalic’s album and fuck me if this doesn’t just destroy everything around you. When this gets dropped on the dance floor – my oh my.

And then we have an edit of SebastiAn’s latest release. The original builds for 11 minutes – it’s more of s statement in its own right – but this edit gets into to a lot quicker, and the drop is well worth it. I love this man.

Blue Christmas – a festive indie mixtape

The shops may think that Christmas starts in mid October, but we all know that in reality you should only start preparing on 1st December with that first choccy in the advent calendar.

So as a way of starting off the musical advent (and I’m in no way religious, but enjoy a reason for a gluttonous festival as much as the next man), we have a little Christmas/winter indie mixtape from the kind folk over at XO Publicity. A little change from the Slade/Wham/East 17 that you”re all hearing elsewhere.

We’ve always done a little bit to spread the festive spirit in the four years we’ve been going, but rest assured that our normal duties of finding the best emerging talent takes no breaks. It’s just we might find time to slip in a few festive gems on top.

Clap to the Electricity Vol.11 with Good Luck at the Gunfight, Pony Pony Run Run, Milke, Discobot, Bloody Beetroots

It’s finally here. a full six months since the last one here is a few more electro wonders to throw at everyone.

Good Luck at the Gunfight have been one of my favourite finds of the last couple of months, with a distinctly summery Daft Punk-esque sound going on in their debut (and free) EP.

Filthy Dukes have produced some more eminently danceable synthpop from there wonderful Nonsense in the Dark

James Rutledge does the remix job on Fever Ray to make Triangle Walks sound a little like La Roux coming up.

Fear of Tigers turns in some synth dramatics to turn Ghost in the Water‘s Dodging Lazers into pure pop electro.

Tesla Boy have more familiar electric goodness that makes you want to dance.

Pony Pony Run Run have been remixed by StereoHeroes remix on Hey You to bring in straight to any disco floor that wants the kids jumping.

TBW favourites Magic Wands have been remixed by Kitsune‘s Crystal Fighters who have added their fucking amazing electro-spanish dance work making this my favourite remix. Thanks to Mac for the tip on these guys back when I was at Edinburgh – you were very very right.

The Bloody Beetroots do their electro-disco-pop workout on Bugo‘s La Mano Mia. Yes is pure pop, but it doesn’t pretend to be anything else and will bring a smile to any face.

Milke‘s Love get out of my way has been given the Designer Drugs treatment (and I would say their best remix work to date) as it turns into a indie-electro track that should get anybody to move.

Mottorama‘s Far Better has been remix by Brazil’s Subtropics label-mate Discobot. This (and the rest of the free Subtropics EP) has been in very heavy rotation here since it turned up just after our last mixtape. Brazillian electro-punk at its best. The whole EP is just fucking fantastic.

Cryptonites come in with something a bit heavier and a load of distortion with Boots Electric

Automatic Panic has been remixed by Trash Yourself in their typically distorted banger-esque style. It needs to be loud and but when it drops really really pushes forward.

Dance favourite Mr Oizo has been given the remix treatment by Arveen & Misk with a distorted disco-like bassline and a little synth masterclass.

Trash Yourself and Toxic Avenger‘s Die has been worked over by Jesse Jamz to continue things heavy with distorted vocals covered in beautiful beeps and squeeks.

The Darker Side of Synths with Pegase, James Rutledge, Future Islands and Ben Sollee

With the cold spell and the rain coming back to our shores, now seems a perfect time to showcase a few of the artists that showcase the other, slower, deeper and darker side of electronic music.

Pegase starts of the mix with a track that has soundtracked some of my more personal and introspective moments over the last few months after Bec over at Electrorash picked him up. Slow epic and atmospheric electronic movements demonstrating his skill makes Pegase one of the most exciting electronic artists of the moment.

Shark Speed offer a more positive note, but slower and more precise synth piece, with what sound like reversed drum crescendoing throughout to help the song build. Beautiful.

The Deer Tracks have a more chaotic sound to them that in parts remind me of Meursault, but this is all bedtime story electronic rather than moving in the folk direction.

James Rutledge seems to be getting a good amount of well deserved attention at the moment, as he lends his expansive electric atmospheric soundscapes that meander around its theme

Fever Ray offer a very simple song structure with constant reverberating bass and slow rhythm with that builds itself into your consciousness.

Future Islands here display their softer side in this ballad that could almost be Sigur Ross if it wasn’t for a vocal line that could be from a song from the 50s.

The Thrills have been remixed by the wonderful Sebastien Tellier to turn their pure pop ballad from a year or two ago with smooth sweeping synth gestures which brings a new emotional depth to the song.

Alaska in Winter keep a repetitive drum thump throughout this track in which the vocoded vocals blend into the synth melody which is one of my favourite songs for the 6am comedown shift.

Casiotone for the Painfully Alone were previously featured on my summer playlist but here they play a ballad love lost with distorted drums to maintain their disjointed sound and keeping the song relatively upbeat.

James Delay picks up the rhythm a bit, with plenty of brass samples but staying with the slower and more relaxed feel that would be called “chill out” if that hadn’t become such a dirty term over the past couple of years.

Ben Sollee‘s abilities of penning lyrics and vocal melodies with depth and yet catchy are demonstrated to fantastic effect in this Computer v Banjo Remix.

The Darker Side of Synths

Summer days through the folkish haze vol.2

This has been a long time coming, but today I’ve got 2 CDs worth of amazing summer music. The first disc is more folk based in keeping with last summer’s mix, with the second less folky but just as perfect for the summer afternoons in the sunshine.

We have a few of the bands that were on the last mix popping up again, but most on here have not been featured on TBW before. As I’ve been out of the game for a while, some of these have been around for a few months, and then of course there are a couple of older tracks thrown in for good measure. Also, as some people haven’t noticed – you an download each mp3 individually by the right clicking and choosing “save target as”.

Coeur de Pirate starts off the mix with a blissful and beautifully simple summer piano based piece. The vocals in french create ideas of a simpler time of love and life in the rural countryside.

Gregory and the Hawk offer a great bit of acoustic summery pop. The vocals and very clean production may lend this to some soundtracks in the future, but don’t let that put you off. Easy and relaxed.

Tom Brosseau has crafted exactly what I love about folk music that evokes green summery bliss. It may just be Tom and his guitar and feels familiar, but it is summer folk perfection. Where’s that cider festival right now?

Run Toto Run are on here for a cover of Passion Pit’s debut single ‘Sleepyhead’, which was fantastic in its own right, but here they take out all the sweet electrics and replace them with what sounds like a fiddle and yet somehow avoids sounding too sickly sweet. Once the chorus breaks in, the sun should break through the clouds.

Marina & The Diamonds have been making a name for themselves over the last twelve months, with neon Gold putting out a few records. Here they offer some perfectly formed harmonious pop with a beat that you can’t help tapping your foot to.

Casiotone for the Painfully Alone have the rough production sound that gives their music a certain innocence, and ending this track with an organ line from when the saints go marching just adds to that view.

Jeffrey Lewis is one of those artists that has been established for a while but as I don’t have a history of folk was only recently introduced to him from a Song by Toad podcast. This is cute, funny and reflective, and a track I can’t get out of, even if it is a good few years old.

Kay Kay and his Weathered Underground are on here again with another pop song that sounds like it could have been produced by the Beatles back in the days of Revolver. I may be a Stones man, but pop and folk music came together in the 60s and this owes a lot to that time. Who can’t resist playing a little Beatles at a BBQ?

Drew Helsinki (McConnell) is another from the last mix. Compared to the last one we featured this track is less haphazard, but again shows off his skills for producing simple pop songs that fit on any playlist.

Laura Barrett is on here for a cover of a Harry Nilsson track which brings a xylophone, violins and whistling into the mix, how could I resist such American folk perfection? It demonstrates how we have always looked back to simpler times with rose tinted spectacles even since the industrial revolution.

Small Crew have written a effortless pop song of hope and chasing dreams. Something that is part of that gentle summer emotional reflection that forms plenty of my summer days.

Jay Jay Pistolet are another cropping up from last year and again have produced some folk mastery with Oh Caroline. A just wondrous guitar based folk love song with harmonies and an harmonica that demonstrates why folk music is summer music.

Mumford & Sons have been making a name for themselves over the past 6 months or so with their 3 EPs, following in the footsteps of Noah and the Whale and Johnny Flynn. More great new English folk.

Aidan Moffat & The Best Ofs may be one of the best band names I’ve heard in a while and here give us some more folky summery perfection, with some simple brush drumming and harmonicas tripping us through Aiden’s wonderful deep vocal drawl that almosts makes me think of a happy folk version of Johnny Cash.

The Crookes finish off the first disc pop folk track of stories of youthful and blissful love. Simple structure and catchy rhythms and a few hand claps makes this a fitting end for the first section of the mix.

Summer Days through the Folkish Haze Vol.2 CD1

Ex Lovers starts of the second disc with an easy and almost tweepop track that reminds me of the good parts of Voxtrot from a few years ago. Now seems to be the perfect time for listening to such tracks if ever there was a time.

Heartless Bastards offer an effortless and timeless garage rock ballad with singer Erika Wennerstrom’s voice easily falling between that rock growl and pop harmony. Wonderful.

The Paper Cranes demonstrate their talents for crafting great pop songs here. They fold a number of clever riffs into one song that should sound over complicated, but somehow finds its way it being simple, cheery pop pop pop as they say on their MySpace

Doctors & Dealers are another to be able to make a very simple and familiar song feel somehow new and interesting with a few well placed harmonies and a foot-tapping beat throughout.

Elizabeth & The Catapult‘s Taller Children begins with just the vocals and drums making an easy pop song, before the rest of the band jumping in and making the whole thing a lot more interesting and showing off their rock and roll side which is always going to go down well with me.

Buke and Gass start off with a couple of pretty angular and disjointed riffs which slowly fall into place with the vocals. They are like a more pop YYYs, but with songs that blow the YYYs last album out the water.

Leopold And His Fiction have a track that reminds me of the Datsuns debut a good few years ago now. They might not have that bass driven growl, but write better 70s themed rock/pop than most actually did back in the decade.

The Fine Arts Showcase have written in ‘London, My Town’ one of my favourite tracks of the last six months. It is a wonderous rock/pop that sound familiar but new, rough round the edges and yet clean. I don’t how to pigeon-hole it right now and I don’t really want to, but you just need to listen.

Magic Wands are one of my bands to watch of the moment as they are regularly putting out catchy, danceable pop/rock and Black Magic shows off those quite impressive skills pretty well.

Goldhawks‘ ‘Where in the world’ may have been posted about within the last couple of months, but it is such an expansive and engrossing song that it fitted so well into this mix that I couldn’t leave it out.

Wolf Gang has a single out on the constantly amazing Neon Gold and have been on my radar for a little while now (thanks Angus). I have just been waiting for the mp3 and a good reason to share it. That is now, and here is a beautifully layered piece of unrepressed pop that should be on everyone’s summer soundtrack no-matter what genres you’re into.

Clap to the Electricity Vol.10 with Passion Pit, Little Boots, The Random, AC Slater and Deadmau5

It has been a long time coming, but definitely worth the wait with 2 discs worth of electro-pop to electro-noise perfection. As per usual, some of these you will know and others you should.

Passion Pit are tipped to be huge this year (even by the BBC) and this remix puts some better beats behind it. Little Boots offer some more of their beautiful electro-pop and Yukseks puts his golden electro touch on Tommy Sparks. The Random (as a duo and Tony Roballo on his own) also offer something special and I’m sure will gather quite a following in 2009. Then the best remix I heard last year by Foamo of the always excellent Mystery Jets. Somehow their tunes lend themselves rather well to amazing remixes.

On disc two we have some of the TBW favourites in SebastiAn, Deadmau5 and more Little Boots, along with something a little different from Beoes Kaelstigen.Â AC Slater (yes named after that one from Saved by the Bell) is picked for big things this year, and understandably as he cracks out remixes and originals tunes that take plenty of influences from 90s dance but somehow ending up very 2009. Designer Drugs and Trash Yourself also come in with something a little heavier for when the party is well underway.

It has been far far too long since I put together one of these mixes, and the clubs I have been to in the meantime have been the best I have experienced, from Ibiza to Beirut to Tel Aviv to London – all awesome incl Matter at the O2 if you ever get to go, do). There was a rough mix floating around on my facebook over the summer, but this is the first one for months and months to fulfill the wait. So apologies for the really really long delay, but here it is, finally…Clap to the Electricity Vol.9.

As usual, we have a mixture of some names you could/should have heard of like Van She, Yuksek and Alex Gopher, and some you might not like Flou, The BPA, Prairie Cartel and Trash Yourself. All, as normal – are *great* in their own right. In fact, the Alex Gopher track on here has got to be in my top 5 for the year. Done.

One quick note of interest too – is The BPA (Brighton Port Authority), which is a collaboration project between Norman Cook (Fatboy Slim) and David Byrne, Dizzee Rascal, Emmy The Great, Iggy Pop, Pete York, Jack Penate, Jamie T, Martha Wainwright, Conan, Olly Hite, Lateef, Ashley Beedle, Simon Thornton, Thomas Gandey, and Justin Robertson. That is one impressive roll call, and I imagine we should be seeing some more of their stuff on TBW in the neat future.
