Fanzine

Taking their name from that most obsessive of music scribblings, Fanzine offer some blissfully catchy as hell summer tunes. They last blipped onto our radar last summer with Susan, but this time they’ve come bearing four delicious presents – one each for some of our favourite digital zines (Transparent, Abeano, The Line Of Best Fit, and Double Denim (who I thought were more of a label than a zine but still awesome)).

It’s all sun-bleached fuzzy powerpop and its wondrous.

Oh…and to pay homage to their name they made their own PDF fanzine too. Check it.

Michael Kiwanuka

I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for those soft lullabies from the likes of Bill Withers and Otis Redding, and that is exactly what you get with Michael Kiwanuka (Facebook/Twitter) whose debut EP came out on Communion a couple of weeks ago.

Kiwanuka is London born, but with roots in Uganda and has had a hand in making some pretty varied tunes – from being a session guitarist with Labrinth, to being the producer behind Tinie Tempah’s Pass Out. But it is his softer solo projects that has caught my attention with his rootsy soul voice over stripped-back soft guitar as in the City Sessions or Black Cab Sessions videos below or strings and brass on the record. It’s easy, soulful and beautiful to sit-back and listen to in the sunshine.

Little Green Cars

Dublin-based teenagers Little Green Cars have their debut single, The John Wayne, coming out on the ever wonderful Young & Lost Club on the 25th July, and it’s a impressive statement of intent. It’s a lovesong about failing to win the affections of an American teen by being refused entry to a nightclub – something that left singer/guitarist Stevie Appleby to go home and record the song using pots and pans instead of drums. Old school.

The sound is a lo-fi the Mamas and the Papas, with heartfelt harmonies and embracing simple pop-rock and on occasion gospel blues melodies giving absolutely no credence to what current fashions have determined as cool. A sound they like for themselves, and with the help the production skills of David Kosten (The Guillemots and Bat for Lashes) a sound for this summer.

If you want a special night – catch them supporting Bastille at The Underbelly (Hoxton) on 6th July
