Beth Jeans Houghton has been circling the ground we call ‘under the radar’ for some time now. She played a tiny Norwich show back in 2009, which was where I first encountered her, and 2010 saw an impressive string of boutique festival appearances with a few notable bigger ones. This month she signed to Mute Records and announced plans for a full-length album debut to be released this autumn.

Her sound is an eclectic blend of folk, folk rock and lofi pop, and both her recordings and live performances are a welcome breath of fresh air for the ‘female’ genre in music. Expect frantic, ballsy fashion decisions with pure sonic loveliness to back it up. Ahead of the album’s release, Miss Houghton is offering the brilliant ‘Dodecahedron’ as a freebie, available via the SoundCloud player below. This gem of a track really speaks for itself, showcasing an important new talent who’ll be going onto gloriously big things this year.

Cosmo Jarvis - Sure As Hell Not Jesus EPOur Joe Bloggers showcase tonight and we have one more artist to profile in advance of the doors opening at 7.30pm, and that is Cosmo Jarvis (Facebook). His sound is delicious mix of pop, funk, blues – a little hard to pin down, but every song abounds with energy and enthusiasm.

His second album is on the way, but I’ve been distracted by his latest Sure As Hell Not Jesus EP which demonstrates is rather impressive pop-writing abilities in the way only 4-song EPs can.
The title track is a summery, cheery piece delight of a pop tune that offers sing-along choruses and foot-tapping rhythms – catchy as fuck then.

My favourite on the EP, however, is What’s Wrong With Betty (Part 1) which starts off with a rock 70s-esque crescendo before throwing in a little bluegrass and folk behind a strong indie beat reminding me of Larrikin Love. And apparently the Part 1 is in reference to What’s Wrong With Betty being a 4-part opus – so here’s me looking forward to hearing the other three.

Want to here Cosmo live? Pop down to Dingwalls, Camden tonight – doors at 7.30pm.
