5 Live Picks from Callie Morris

Today’s guest post is written by Callie Morris, Web Editor of Aloud.com (you know – the tickets people) who describes her biggest love as “going to lots of gigs and discovering new bands”. A good fit for us at The Blue Walrus then.

So as we steadily roll into summer (slightly optimistic there?) I’m sure you’re all beginning to plan things like festivals, gigs, bbq’s and everything else that makes us happy about summer… To help you decide who to prioritise in 2011 we have Callie Morris, web editor from ticketing website Aloud.com to give us her top tips for the 5 best upcoming artists to discover this year.

Jai Paul

Jai Paul is a bit exciting… Recently becoming label mates with the likes of The xx, M.I.A and Adele has pretty much ensured his imminent rise to fame. Sounding like a mixture between indie, dubstep and pop with some angry synth thrown in for good measure, there is definitely something about him that I just can’t get enough of. Until he releases an album or at least some more tracks I’m just going to spread the word about his single BTSTU… Amaze.
With influences from UB40, Prince and Basement Jaxx he has certainly created his own style of music. Definitely one to watch out for in 2011. Check out his Myspace for more information and some clips of people dancing to BTSTU, dancing hard.

Warpaint

The Los Angeles based ‘art rock’ band have just performed at the NME Awards Tour, where they performed tracks from their debut album The Fool having just been released late last year. Their first single from this album ‘Shadows’ has caught everybody’s attention, especially with its awesome remix from Neon Lights… Warpaint are hauntingly good with their experimental melodies and effects and will undoubtedly give you an unforgettable performance.

Magnetic Man

So… Who/what is Magnetic Man? A team of dubstep greats Artwork, Benga and Skream, with the end result being pretty impressive. Notable collaborations with artists such as Katy B and John Legend will ensure that Magnetic Man is one to watch this year, check out the video above and see if you agree, definitely one for the festival circuit – make sure you get on board!

Janelle Monae

With her trademark style of starched tuxedos Janelle Monae’s hair is also always styled into a perfect quiff. She says this is because being immaculately turned out on stage is like her uniform – when she is wearing a tux it means that she is ‘at work’.

Having been around for a while it’s only recently that everyone has started to notice the potential in Janelle Monae. Check out her debut full-length album The ArchAndroid (Suites II and III). It’s good.

Jamie Woon

Jamie Woon barely needs any description – his voice is ridiculously good. Placing 4th on the BBC Sound of 2011 he is definitely one to go and see. Originally from North-East London he is the 4th generation of of a line of professional musicians, so combine this with his unbelievable vocal talent and we realise it was only a matter of time before we’d begin to know about him. Plus, if you catch him on tour soon he may just bust out a pretty epic rockier version of ‘Spirits’ for you…
