The People’s Music Awards are the world’s first Global Unsigned Music Awards, online chart and music network, recognising talent across nine music categories. The judges this year include Annie Nightingale (Radio One), Tony Platt (Island Studios), and Hayden Bendall (Abbey Road Studios), but the public have played the biggest part by voting on the huge number of entries on the website.

The results will be announced at the Live Awards Event at MASS in Brixton this Thursday (tickets available here), where winners of each music category will be performing.

More information on the Awards, the artists, and on this Thursday’s event can be found on the People’s Music Awards website: www.thepeoplesmusicawards.com. Download some of the tracks from the finalists below.

Tom Brosseau is one of those rare gems who has stayed pretty under the radar in the music world so far, but let me be the first to assure you it’s not due to a lack of talent or prowess. This latest release from an artist I can only describe as an underground genius is elegant, persuasive and soul-driven.  Despite being American, Tom Brosseau definitely boasts the oh-so-popular London indie feel of today’s music scene. Falling somewhere within the indie-folk-rock genre (aren’t categories fun?), Brosseau may very well find himself an eager audience here in Britain – alas, perhaps not ’Posthumous Success’ just yet.

Brosseau’s relatively husky vocals won’t be immediately appealing to everyone, but there’s a real ‘grower’ quality to his whole sound. Opening track ‘Favourite Colour Blue’ (available for free download below) showcases a structured writing technique and addictive acoustic guitar hooks; this really strikes me as the stuff of movie soundtracks. Artistically part of the anti-folk movement, where other artists are in danger of copying the trendsetters of this mutating genre, Tom Brosseau pulls off a distinct take on in – probably because he’s been doing it eight albums longer than most of the new artists popping up. In places, Brosseau’s sound bends towards the alt-rock side of things, giving a thematic quality quite reminiscient of early Placebo records.

Brosseau, who’s currently touring the UK alongside PJ Harvey, really is one to watch at that moment. If you haven’t heard him yet, download the track below, and jump on the bandwagon before it’s full!

Cagedbaby

Cagedbaby, who was just incredible live last year, has been working on new material with the new single ‘Forced’ to be released on April 26th on Southern Fried Records. I haven’t heard the orginal yet, but this remix from Foamo (who took the crown of mest remix last year on that Mystery Jets track)  hits all the right buttons. Fucking amazing.
