Snazzy Vol.8 – GoodBooks, The Moths, The Wombats and YACHT

24 June 2007 3 Comments

I know it’s been a long time coming, and a lot has gone on in the weeks since I last posted including holidays to Greece, moving servers for this blog, an apparently mind blowing Daft Punk set at the O2 Wireless festival, and now Glasto – that weekend of mud – is also coming to an end. I’m also hosting the mp3s on my server now so there shouldn’t be anymore bandwidth exceeded messages for you all.

As the Snazzy compilations go this one has to be my greatest one so far if nothing else but for putting the best unsigned band of 2006 (The Wombats – now signed to 14th Floor) and the best unsigned band of 2007 (The Moths) in the same mix.

We start off slow and laid back with this piece of catchiness from Department of Eagles. Think the beach boys, but so relaxed is horizontal.

Get Cape, Wear Cape, Fly has made an acoustic cover of the Gossip’s modern classic of Standing in the way of Control. You’ve got acoustic drums and guitar and a brass section.

Saturna have created the stuff I loved from Black Rebel Motorcycle Club with their first album when I saw them at reading years ago. BRMC may be back on form with their new record but they’ve got some competition in that driving bluesy rock genre.

GoodBooks have been popping up on playlists of mine since I first heard them on an early Transgressive Podcast. Passchendale, a song named after a battle at Ypres during WW1. The verses have some awkward guitars and some rhythm which then merges into hazy summer pop for the chorus. Awesomeness.

I won’t claim to have discovered The Moths (there has been some buzz about them in the last few weeks), but I definitely agree with the enthusiasm about these guys. One the face of it they aren’t that special, with a guitar, keys and a singer over a drum machine, but the growling pop rock that that they produce certainly is. They have put out what basically amounts to a triple A-side with Games, Wild Birds and Valentine. How many times does that happen? Three fucking awesome tracks for the price of a single. Perfect.

It was great to see The Wombats when they came up to Edinburgh, and here i…well…their summer hit. These boys are awesome as I’ve been saying for months and 14th Floor better appreciate what they have with them on their new record.

YACHT have created another tune for that pre-rave period where everything is just starting to hit, its a build up before the DJ drops some Justice or SMD (Both of whom have new amazing albums out as well).

Great mix of some good artists. I was trying to download the zip file but it doesn’t appear to work? I am looking to download GCWCF’s cover of Standing in the Way Of Control- is it possible to send it to me?
