The Wombats and Bunker with The Loose Cannons
Posted on 05.19.07 by tim @ 4:11 pm

Finally finished my exams on the 15th and a 72 hour binge has kept me from posting since then but what a few days it’s been. Having been drinking all day we were off to see my favourite band of the last few months - The Wombats - and they certainly didn’t disappoint. Caught the end of goFaster’s set, who seemed pretty decent but weren’t as polished or as fucking awesome as the Wombats.

I only normally go to Cab Vol for club nights like Bunker (which by the way was mind-blowing with The Loose Cannons on Friday - SSSSPPPPPAAAAANNNNKKK/////ED - thanks Simon), but this was well worth it. Starting off with their almost-babershop sounding Boys, Girls and Marsupials got us singing along before cracking into their rockier stuff. I was hammered and dancing like a lunatic surrounded by a fantastic atmosphere. Highlights of the set for me were the anthemic Backfire at the Disco and the tune of my summer Little Miss Pipedream. As my flatmate Fogle commented it is nice to find a band who all seem such “genuine good lads” and wonders if they are going to have to drop the fresh faced image if they are to become verified rockstars - probably starting with dropping the ‘barbershop’ trio warm up. I don’t think I’ve said awesome enough to describe it. Perfect way to start the summer.

Here comes the Sun

First of all I feel I should apologise for having not posted in a couple of weeks, but I have exams (basically finals - but with some more next year - fun!) which I am now over half way through and have a little break. I’ve been distracting myself by maxing my credit card on flights to celebrate the summer.

In that vain, and with the beautiful sunshine coming through my window I thought it was high time I would stick together a summer mix. There will be more over the coming weeks and months, but this is to get everyone in the mood to sit in the garden or on the beach with some pimms, some cider and generally getting lashed in the sun.

This mix includes some great new unsigned acts such as Sean Wilde with his Hot Chipesque electro, a track from the awesome Friends of the bride that has best been described as indie soul, the beautiful songwriting of the Swedish band Laura (with the song from the Saab biodiesel TV ad), and the catchy talents of Laura Marling. It also features one of my favourite bands of the last couple of years, Voxtrot, as well as a couple of great covers by The Subways and the late great Nina Simone and some other fantastic happy/summer tunes besides.
