Snazzy Vol.6 - Beagley, Blonde Redhead, Pigeon Detectives, Dead Disco, Young Love
Posted on 02.24.07 by tim @ 2:46 am

Finally finished and handed in the bloody essay yesterday - wahoo! This means I can make up for the neglect of the walrus with a decent amount of updates over the coming few days starting with the latest Snazzy Compilations. That would be Volume 6.

I was sent a few Beagley songs last week and they seem to have some very good potential, but need a little better production. However this cover just caught my attention, and has been spinning on my main playlist for a few days and I have to say I love it. Bloc Party done in an acoustic almost twee style - trust me it works.

Blonde Redhead, one of my favourite bands over the last couple of years, have a new album out and this is a great little taster. I think 23 is their most accessible album yet, so hopefully they’ll be finding some more fans this year.

The Pigeon Detectives recently played here at Edinburgh, and as a great up and coming band that is not particularly common. Glasgow is a bit cooler I suppose, but although I couldn’t make it, my flatmate did and loved the evening.

This Dead Disco remix by Metronomy has electro goodness all over it. The staccato chopped vocals, the synth line, the build up. An example of a good song becoming great with a remix.

Young Love are another band which should be having a pretty good 2007 if what I’ve heard from them so far is anything to go by, danceable indie have some new pretenders to the throne.

Snazzy Vol.5 - Kate Nash, Lady & Bird, Zero 7, Arthur Russell, and Jack Penate
Posted on 02.11.07 by tim @ 12:03 am

My workload is getting rather excessive here at uni at the moment with me having to write an 8000 word essay on Soviet Espionage (but some people like writing sh*tload), making my music taste a lttle slower than normal as I can’t go out as much as I would like to. Anyway, enough of my problems and onto the music for this week.

Kate Nash reminds me a little of Lily Allen and a little of Alex Shepard, which should make her one of my favourite artists over the coming months as she releases some more stuff.

Lady & Bird is apparently not a new tune at all, and I think this song is a cover of Velvet Underground, but she has turned it into a beautiful soft song to lay back to in the winter months - and my God it is cold here at the moment even if we don’t have much snow yet.

Zero 7 have always made great laid back tunes and this remix by Hot Chip just updates one of my favourite songs with some great electronic sounds to make it sound fresh again.

This Arthur Russell track is the one from the T-Mobile advert (the one with the people dragging buildings down a street) which I have been looking for for a while. It is minimalist perfection and the bongos are always a bonus. Why is it I get into artists 15 years after they died? He seems to have been a true talent on the cello.

Jack Penate is someone who I’m behind the world in picking up, but it looks like 2007 will be a good year for him, with his odd dress sense but catchy as F*ck songs. I’m not completely down - this song is my pick-me-up

Snazzy Vol.4 - Jamie T, Karen O, Los Campesinos, The Hussys, and Panthers
Posted on 02.01.07 by tim @ 3:26 pm

As much as I try to claim I’m ahead of the trend, that isn’t always the case and Los Compesinos are a band which have been getting some serious blogging love recently, and yet have taken me a little while longer to get into. This track almost fits into the twee genre - but they haven’t gone as far down this route as Voxtrot.

More Jamie T loving is generally a given on here, but I have some more music from the man from Wimbledon, which rumours have it a certain Ward may or may not have had relations with (scandal?) ;) but here is his cover of Bedouin Soundclash.

I know Jackass isn’t big or celever, but the new movie is f*cking fantastic - much better than the first one and here is a song written for the film by Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and is pretty damn catchy. The terrorist skit at the end of the movie is worth seeing it in itself.

The Hussys create some great catchy pop/rock and I think this song about Napoleon Dynamite shows off their talent pretty well.

After the popularity of the remixes I posted a few weeks ago that got me into a little trouble, here’s a great MSTRKRFT remix of Panthers, that creates a great party tune. Oh - and I’m actually allowed to post this one - yay!
